PORTLAND -- With a little help from the neighborhood watch, deputies nabbed two burglars in Northeast Portland Friday.

Sheriff s deputies got a call shortly after 11 a.m. from a concerned neighbor who reported two suspicious young men wearing hoodies near the intersection of Northeast 51st Street and Northeast 40th Avenue, said Sgt. Shane Gardner with the Clark County Sheriff s Department.

When deputies showed up, they saw the suspects take off running through backyards of the neighborhood, Gardner said.

One deputy spotted a home where a window screen had been removed, near where the suspects had been seen. Other evidence indicated the home had been entered. The other deputy watched a suspect dump loot from his backpack as he fled.

Other deputies then showed up to with a K-9 unit and surrounded the area. Devonte Pankey was nabbed after the police dog grabbed him. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a dog bite, Gardner said.

Deputies later found the other suspect walking through the neighborhood after previously spotting him several times as he fled through backyards.

Deputies arrested Pankey and a juvenile male whom they did not name for residential burglary, Gardner said.
