MCMINNVILLE, Ore. -- A clerk at a McMinnville convenience store foiled an armed robbery attempt by telling the suspect he couldn't open the register unless a purchase was made, police said.

Officers were called to the report of an attempted robbery just after 11 p.m. in the Center Market, at 509 Northeast Baker Street, according to Sgt. Tim Symons of the McMinnville Police Department.

The victim told police a man went into the store, showed that he had a revolver in his waistband and demanded money from the register, Symons said.

The clerk explained that he couldn't open the till unless a purchase was made and the male eventually left with nothing, Symons added.

The suspect was last seen walking north on Baker Street. He was described as white, in his 20s, about 5-foot-8, with a stocky build.He was wearing a black hoodie, black sweat pants and a baseball cap. He had a scarf covering the lower half of his face.
