PORTLAND A man drowned in the Columbia River near Sauvie Island after he fell off a SeaDoo watercraft Saturday afternoon, deputies said.

Authorities said 39-year-old Scott Ankrom was too impaired to survive the fall from his watercraft even though he was wearing a life jacket.

Ankrom was pulled ashore shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told deputies that Ankrom was highly intoxicated while operating the watercraft, said Lt. Dustin Hald with Columbia County Sheriff s Office.

Deputies found evidence of alcohol and marijuana that they believe to be contributing factors in the death, Hald said.
