ST. HELENS, Ore. - The accused killer of Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter was in court Wednesday for refusing medical treatment, according to the Columbia County Sheriff s Office.

Court records show the Columbia County the jail reported on March 22 that Daniel Butts had stabbed himself in the head and developed an infection. His Multnomah County jail mug shot from March 23 clearly shows a head wound.

Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson told KGW that Butts was taken to a hospital for the head wound, but he would not allow anyone to treat it. Then he was brought back to jail.

Dickerson said the Wednesday court session was called when Butts' attorneys expressed concerns over their client s medical situation.

Judge Ted Groves has set a timetable to address those issues, according to the sheriff.

Butts has been accused of killing Painter in January 2011 inside a car repair shop.

Following mental health evaluations, Butts was found competent in February to stand trial for Painter's murder.
