PORTLAND -- After a long standoff with police overnight, Occupy Portland protesters retreated and began cleaning out their downtown encampments and leaving Sunday morning.

City dump trucks pulled up alongside Lownsdale Park and Chapman Square and protesters were filling them with tents, tarps and debris from their camps. By noon, city officials said enough trash to fill 46 dumpsters had been cleared from the parks.

Police helped clear out the parks and then installed tall fences around them, locking the public out.

Mayor Sam Adams said maintenance crews will work in the coming days to finish clearing and restoring the parks before they will be re-opened.
