PORTLAND, Ore. -- The ear-splitting blasts from the vuvuzela horns will no longer be heard in PGE Park. The Portland Timbers decided to ban the horns Friday.

The decision to prohibit vuvuzelas at PGE Park was made with the overall fan experience in mind, spokesman Chris Metz said.

The horns are modeled after those used to call in long stretches of country in the African wilderness. They became popular worldwide during the 2010 World Cup last summer.

With the best supporters in the country, the atmosphere of a Timbers match is so unique and the club, in addition to many of its fans, felt that vuvuzelas are not part of that authentic Timbers experience, Metz added.
