COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The Lane County Sheriff's Office has identified a 16-year-old boy who died Tuesday after he tried to rescue his younger brother at the top of Wildwood Falls, near Cottage Grove.
Scott Alexander Smith was walking on rocks near the falls Tuesday afternoon with his brother when the younger boy slipped and began to slide down the rocks into the water, according to Sgt. Carrie Carver. The top of the rock wall is about 30 feet above the base of the falls.
Witnesses say Smith went into the water to save his brother and both went down a narrow chute of water. Carver says the younger boy emerged from the water but the older boy did not did not.
Carver said Smith's body was recovered after a tow truck was brought in to remove a large log from the water chute, allowing access to him. He was dead by the time crews reached him.
