PORTLAND A woman was severely injured Monday morning when a vacant home caught fire in Southeast Portland, officials said.

Fire crews were called to a house fire at 9809 SE Holgate street around 8:50 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Chris Babcock of Portland Fire & Rescue.

The house appeared to be vacant and there was no furniture, working smoke alarms or electricity inside according to Babcock. The windows had been boarded up.

When firefighters arrived, flames were lapping up the front window. Neighbors told crews a woman was inside the house.

We had so much smoke inside, Babcock said. Our crews did a real good job on the search and rescue. They removed the patient immediately and stepped up treatment.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries from burns and smoke inhalation.

The woman was rushed to the burn center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Crews were trying to figure out if the woman owned the home or was just living in it.
