EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- Eugene Police Chief Pete Kerns says an officer shouldn't have cursed at an off-duty state trooper who was ejected from a University of Oregon football game.

But Kerns ruled this week that Officer Jed McGuire otherwise followed department policies while taking the trooper into custody.

Trooper Marc Boyd filed a misconduct complaint after an incident that unfolded in the stands during the Washington State game in October.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports that the chief ruled that McGuire did not use excessive force and did not break policy by refusing to identify himself to Boyd, as the trooper alleges.

Police said Boyd argued with fans, then with the officer before resisting arrest. He was not jailed or charged with any crime, but remains on paid administrative leave while state police conduct a personnel investigation.
