REEDSPORT, Ore. -- A man was killed when his car struck a stand of trees along Highway 101 Monday afternoon.

Bruce Norman Ashton, 68, was traveling on Highway 101 south of Reedsport at around 1:15 p.m. when his Chevy Avalanche crashed into several trees along the roadside, said Oregon State Police.

Ashton had been wearing a seat belt and his airbags went off, but police said he died at the scene of the accident.

State police said they were continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and that high speed may have been a factor.
