PORTLAND-- A woman crossing the street to her mailbox early Monday evening was struck by a car and killed, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched about 5:30 p.m. to Southwest Elwert Road near Schroeder Lane.

Emergency crews determined that Joan Carol Deyoung-Burklund had been struck by a vehicle and died at the scene, police said.

The driver, Wesley Crockett, 30, of Forest Grove, remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies.

A preliminary investigation shows that Crockett was northbound on Elwert, an unlit road with a speed limit of 55 mph. A driver behind Crockett said he was driving normally and within or below the speed limit, police said.

Crockett said he was unable to see Deyoung-Burklund until the last moment before impact. He swerved to avoid her but struck her with the right front side of his truck. He called 911, along with a second driver.

Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision, police said.
