PORTLAND -- Firefighters nearly had their vehicle hijacked by a man they were trying to help Friday afternoon.

Crews responded to welfare call around 12: 25 p.m. after a man complained of failing health near Northeast 135th Avenue and East Burnside Street. Halfway into the medical examination the man ran off, climbed into a fire bureau SUV and tried to throw it into gear.

Firefighters removed the keys from the vehicle and the man jumped out and headed into traffic.

Firefighters ran after the man and detained him until police arrived and took him into custody.

No one was harmed in the incident.
