INDEPENDENCE, Ore. A motorcycle rider was thrown through the windshield of a pickup truck in a collision near Independence on Oregon 51 Sunday morning. The truck driver was killed and the motorcycle rider was expected to survive, according to police.

Oregon State Police troopers said 77-year-old Billy Austin of Monmouth was northbound making a left turn into a driveway in his Chevrolet pickup truck when it collided with a southbound motorcycle ridden by 22-year-old Bradley Mosey of Independence.

Mosey flew off his Yamaha sportbike, through the windshield and ended up in the rear seat of the pickup.

Speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash.

Both men were flown to Salem Memorial Hospital, where Austin died. Troopers said Mosey's helmet and safety gear helped him survive.
