PORTLAND Hundreds gathered in North Portland Sunday to show their support for Trayvon Martin following the not guilty verdict of George Zimmerman late Saturday in Sanford, Fla.

Speakers took turns using a megaphone to share concerns and frustration about what they consider racial inequality in the criminal justice system.

You can see the diversity of this crowd. You know, this is a wonderful representation of what Portland feels and what Portland is like and how we care about our entire community, said protester K.C. Hanson. We care about what happens across the country and how it impacts everybody else.

I believe that as a progressive country, added protester Chelsea Bennett. We need to move forward and this is setting us back in a big way.

The rally took place at Peninsula Park on North Rosa Parks Way. A group also marched around the area of North Albina Avenue and North Ainsworth Street, holding up pictures of Trayvon Martin and shouting that they want justice.

Yes, it s about Trayvon Martin, but it's also a whole lot of other kids and other things, said Lakeitha Elliott, who works with the Urban League of Portland. It's not just this one case, it's a symptom of a whole bunch of greater issues in this country that we need to be talking about and organizing around.

This Portland demonstration was just one of many protests across the country in response to the Florida jury returning the not guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman.

Sunday s group said it wanted to peacefully protest and their demonstration was a rally for justice.

My hope is that people will organize and talk...It's not just this one case, it's a symptom of a whole bunch of greater issues in this country that we need to be talking about, said Lakeitha Elliot, a Northeast Portland resident.

On Sunday fathers, sons, moms and daughters of all different races took the stage.
