PORTLAND, Ore. -- An inmate who threatened a fellow prisoner at a Portland jail last year is the suspect in a fatal assault at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario.

The Oregon Department of Corrections says 23-year-old Jason Gould died Saturday from injuries he sustained from an assault involving cellmate Thomas Riffenburg.

Last year, Riffenburg threatened an inmate at Multnomah County's Inverness Jail with sharp object fashioned from aluminum venting material.

He was convicted of attempted assault and possession of a weapon as an inmate, along with robbery charges out of Marion and Multnomah counties. His earliest release date is in 2028.

Corrections spokeswoman Liz Craig says police are still investigating Gould's death, and Riffenburg has not been charged.

Gould was imprisoned on attempted robbery and heroin possession charges from Linn County.
