SPANAWAY, Wash. -- A 10-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed by a pickup truck while riding home Thursday evening.

It happened just before 7 p.m. on the 15500 block of 66th Avenue East near Spanaway.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department says that it appears to be a tragic accident saying that the boy pulled in front of the truck.

The 64-year-old driver slammed on his brakes, but was not able to miss the boy. The child was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital where he later died.

The boy was not wearing a helmet according to the sheriff's office.
