BEND, Ore. -- A teen from Bend last week became the first person with Down Syndrome to climb to the 17,600-foot base camp of Mount Everest

Eli Reimer, 15, and his father made the trek to raise money and awareness for disabled children via The Elisha Foundation.

Eli's father said his son led the way to base camp when all the other climbers were dragging behind and needed a boost.

Reimer s milestone came just before World Down Syndrome Day, which was last Thursday.

Eli and his dad arrived back in the United States Friday night to a crowd of supporters in Los Angeles.
