PORTLAND -- After a mostly dry weekend, a new round of weather systems brought heavy rain to the Portland Metro area Monday morning and another wallop hit in the late afternoon.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has been watching the weather especially closely since last week when the area's long dry spell ended and began to put a strain on storm water systems. Cheryl Kuck, spokeswoman for PBOT, warned that it can also cause increased risks for drivers.

Vehicle fluids on the pavement can create slippery conditions. So, be extra cautious, leave more space between you and the vehicle ahead of you and also be aware that there are leaves falling and leaves on wet pavement can create a slick surface, she said.

He predicted that the rain would be especially heavy during the Monday night commute, with another .65 - 1.00 possible. Wind gusts may reach 25 mph, Allard added.
