SALEM, Ore. -- A Republican sports-business consultant announced Thursday he will run in a special election for the congressional seat held by Rep. David Wu, who has resigned.

Rob Cornilles ran against Wu last year and lost 55-42.

Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, Oregon Rep. Brad Witt and Oregon Sen. Suzanne Bonamici are competing for the Democratic nomination.

Other potential candidates from both parties were also considering joining the race.

Wu resigned this week after a published report described an aggressive sexual act by Wu against the teenage daughter of a friend.

Gov. John Kitzhaber will call a special election.
