WALDPORT, Ore. A Tidewater woman died after her car fell down a steep embankment into the Alsea River Saturday evening.

Makala Osborn, 18, was driving a Ford Escort on East Canal Creek Road near Waldport when witnesses reported seeing her car careening down a 50-foot embankment.

The vehicle was reportedly seen upside down in the river before fully submerging in the water, said Sgt. Adam Shanks of the Lincoln County Sheriff s Office.

First responders couldn t get into the doors or see into the car due to murky conditions, Shanks said. A towing company removed the vehicle from the water.

Osborn was found with her seat belt on in the driver s seat. She was the only person in the car.

The cause of the crash was still under investigation.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
