PORTLAND The Portland school board met Monday night to discuss next year s budget and vote on some changes.

PPS approved the plan to add two days to the school year. Now students will have class on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and also for one additional day in June.

Some parents complained during Monday s meeting that they d rather see the two extra days added at the beginning of the school year instead.

This will disadvantage our kids that are preparing for IB and AP testing, except there are some adults that don't want to come to work early in August, said parent Tracy Barton, who represents the Parents Coalition.

The PPS superintendent also went over details of the proposed new budget, which includes money for 150 new teachers and a new early learning center at the Clarendon Elementary School building in North Portland.

The $534 million general fund budget I proposed for the 2014-2015 school year represents a significant reinvestment in our schools and is my first budget message where we are able to strategically invest without simultaneously cutting programs, Superintendent Carole Smith said. This is really exciting news for our students, our staff, and our community.
