PORTLAND -- The Portland Association of Teachers voted to accept a hotly debated teacher contract on Thursday night paving the way for a major round of new teacher hiring and an extension of the school year.

According to the union, teachers overwhelmingly voted in support of the contract.

The contract deal arrived at the eleventh hour on Feb. 18 after 10 months of negotiations and just two days before a historic teacher strike was set to begin.
