PORTLAND On Thanksgiving, before sitting down and giving thanks, many in Portland took to the streets to burn off of few calories.

In true Portlandia style, 250 runners and walkers met at Mt. Tabor Park Thanksgiving morning to take part in the first ever Tofurky Trot.

Organizers from the Tofurky Company, a meat-alternative food producer based out of Hood River, said they wanted to provide an alternative holiday run for the veg friendly . Participants got samples of the soy treat, 300,000 Tofurky roasts will be sold this year.

Three thousand runners braved the frigid Thanksgiving morning temperatures for the Turkey Trot at the Oregon Zoo.

Runners donned turkey-shaped hats, pumpkin pie-shaped hats, even Elvis costumes to take part in the four mile fun run.

The Oregon Road Runners Club put together the event that helps fund animal care and programs at the zoo.

Thanksgiving is also a time for parades and shopping. In New York City big balloons soared along with the crowd's spirits as the annual Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade was under way.

Thanksgiving is also the lead-in to Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year. On Wednesday, campers were starting to line up outside some of Portland s big box stores.
