PORTLAND A man robbed a bank in Northwest Portland Monday afternoon and then threatened people with a replica gun in a nearby building, police said.
Officers responded to the report of an armed bank robbery at Wells Fargo Bank on 845 NW 11th Ave. just after 1:30 p.m.
The man ran into the nearby Ecotrust building and confronted people with a gun, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland police.
It was scary. My heart was pounding for a while, said Kelly Kyser, who was in the building when the suspect ran inside. And a cop came in and he pulled his gun out and said, 'Get out,' and I froze. And he yelled at me again to get out and then I ran in here and got everyone out of the way.
Arriving officers said the suspect was found crouching in a hallway hiding with a weapon. He was quickly arrested.
Investigators later determined that the robber's weapon was a replica gun, but no one in the Ecotrust building knew that.
I was evacuated from the building. I was pretty scared, said worker Angela McIlvaine. This was the first robbery I witnessed.
Witness Piper Baron was outside with her son and said the situation could have been much worse.
Don't do it across from a crowded park where kids play, because there could've been a shootout or situation, she said. And there's nothing but children out here.
The bank robbery suspect was loaded into an ambulance after being arrested Monday.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of dehydration and fatigue and will be booked in jail upon release from the hospital.
The suspect's name was expected to be released Monday evening.
