SALEM -- There is new help for Oregon homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments.

Oregon is one of 18 states participating in the Home Rescue Program which helps homeowners by covering up to a year of their mortgage payments.

It expected to help around 2,500 homeowners statewide and every county has an agency in place to help people determine if they qualify.

The main criteria we're looking for is a loss of income. They have to be able to demonstrate a 10 percent loss of income in comparison to 2011 or 2012, explained Jorge Fernando Guzman with Multnomah County.

For those who do qualify, their mortgage could be paid for up to a year or up to $20,000, with an additional $10,000 to bring their mortgage up to date.

People who want to apply can do so every other Wednesday until the funds run out. Oregon's cut of the federal program is 30 million dollars.

The money comes from the U.S. Treasury s Hardest Hit Fund.
