PORTLAND The Sellwood construction site at River View Cemetery will remain open to bicyclists and pedestrians after cyclists expressed safety concerns.

Construction on a new entrance to the cemetery, which will line up with the new Sellwood Bridge, was set to close the road that runs through River View Cemetery August 12 through September.

But a spokesman for Multnomah County said complaints from bicyclists expressing concerns about the safety of alternate routes caused officials to change the construction plans.

Public access is not usually allowed inside a work zone but the cemetery and project team will make an exception, said Mike Pullen of Multnomah County.

Flaggers will direct traffic through the work zone during the day. Bicyclists must dismount and walk their bike through the zone.

If bicyclists and pedestrians do not comply with the rules, the trail will be closed for public safety, Pullen said.
