SEATTLE The Coast Guard announced Thursday it would not be sending cutters to the Fleet Week celebration at Portland's Rose Festival or Seattle's Seafair, due to federal budget cuts.

We are reducing our participation in various community events to focus our funding on highest priority missions, said Coast Guard Rear Adm. Keith A. Taylor. We will continue to maintain our valuable relationships with the Pacific Northwest communities and will remain Always Ready to answer the call.

Rose Festival spokesman Rich Jarvis said organizers were still working on the detail of this year's Fleet Week program and hoped to release more information by Friday.

The Rose Festival values its longtime relationship with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard and looks forward to the resumption of their participation in our annual Fleet Week in the future, Jarvis said.

Last year the Coast Guard brought in three cutters along the seawall and provided free tours as part of the Rose Festival.

The Coast Guard will continue to provide safety zones and water patrols during both events.

The U.S. Navy announced earlier this month it would not be taking part in Fleet Week celebrations.
