VANCOUVER -- A man whose backpack was allegedly stolen at a Vancouver park Thursday told police he shot one of the men responsible.

A deputy investigating a call near 102nd Avenue and Fourth Plain Boulevard heard a single gunshot at nearby Orchards Park and then saw a man leaving the park, said Sgt. Phil Sample of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy questioned the man, who told him someone had stolen his backpack and gotten into a car with several friends. The man said his attempt to recover the backpack had been unsuccessful, so he used his gun to break out a window of the car and then fired one shot.

A short time later, the occupants of the vehicle showed up at Southwest Peace Health Hospital for medical evaluation, Sample said. One of the occupants had a through-and-through wound to the arm.

The injury was not life-threatening. The 39-year-old shooter was held for questioning and a major crimes team was investigating.
