PORTLAND A sinkhole opened up in Southwest Portland Wednesday and revealed a leaky sewer line.

The sinkhole opened up near the intersection of SW Green and Osage Street when a garbage truck drove over it.

The truck did not fall into the hole and no one was injured.

City workers said a 15-foot stretch of the sewer line had collapsed under the street, ultimately causing the sinkhole.

Crews worked about 6 hours of overtime Wednesday night to get the hole secured, according to Cheryl Kuck with Portland Bureau of Transportation.

She said they would check the rest of the line on Thursday and then complete repairs, fill the hole and pave over it.

The sewage problem was causing quite a stink in the neighborhood. People who live nearby told KGW the smell was so bad, they were forced to avoid spending any time outdoors.
