BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A medical examiner has ruled the death of a 7-week-old boy was a homicide.

The boy's father, 26-year-old Robert Myers, was arrested on murder charges.

The autopsy was completed last weekend. Dr. Christopher Young of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office concluded that Aden Russ Myers died of asphyxia due to smothering and compression. Investigators said there were also signs of past injuries to the infant.

Police were initially dispatched to the King's Court Apartments on Southwest Estuary Drive on Jan. 2 for a call about a child who wasn't breathing, according to Beaverton police spokesman Mike Rowe.

Aden was taken to the hospital and placed on life support. He was pronounced dead a day later.

Robert Myers first told police that he had fallen asleep on the couch next to Aden, and when he woke up the baby was unresponsive. He called 911, Rowe said.

The day after the infant died, police said in a press conference that doctors had discovered a broken bone in the baby's chest, which led them to eventually arrest Myers.
