CLACKAMAS, Ore. (AP) -- Fire damaged about a half-dozen units at a Clackamas apartment complex, but everyone escaped unharmed.

Clackamas Fire District spokesman Jed Walker says the first calls to 9-1-1 were placed shortly before noon Saturday and reported intense flames and smoke.

Arriving fire crews spotted people throwing wrapped Christmas gifts out of a second-floor window. Though heavy smoke could be seen from the Clackamas Town Center more than a mile away, the fire was contained in 20 minutes.

Walker says firefighters rescued several dogs and the pets were passed to anxious owners waiting in the cold rain.

The Red Cross is assisting the 14 people affected by the fire.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
