Republican Vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan made a claim in a radio show last week that he once ran a marathon in under three, high two. I had a two hour 50 something.

Runner's World magazine decided to check out the claim and scoured through the times of the Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minn., the only marathon the candidate has run, back when he was 20.

Read the Runner's World report

Results show that Ryan's actual time was four hours, one minute 25 seconds.

Ryan told Runner's World in a prepared statement: The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin who ran Boston last year reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub- three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight.

Had his original estimate been true, Ryan would have been the fastest marathoner ever to run for the White House.

According to Runner's World John Edwards has run 3:30; George W. Bush has run 3:44; Sarah Palin has run 3:59; and Al Gore has run 4:58.

Following the Runner's World article, a web site was created that converts any runner's best marathon time to a Paul Ryan equivalent marathon time, improving it by more than 30 percent.
