PORTLAND -- -- TriMet is reviewing surveillance video, trying to identify a young woman who carried a machete on a crowded MAX train in Portland.

The agency learned about if from a photo snapped Saturday by a passenger (see photo above) who complained the woman was sharpening the blade and holding the 2-foot-long weapon close to his face.

He said the woman was with a group of street kids and she seemed to be unaware the machete was getting close to people, including children on the crowded train.

The incident happened on the Blue line Saturday about 5:25 p.m. and then the woman with the knife got off at Skidmore Fountain, according to TriMet officials.

Police were not investigating because there are no victims and no one filed a report.

Incidents such as this are rare, and we share the Portland Police Bureau s frustration that no one on the crowded train called 911 during or after the incident, said TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt.

She added that TriMet prohibits any blade longer than three inches, and no weapon can be carried in a manner that causes fear or alarm.
