PORTLAND, Ore. -- Don't throw out the old Christmas tree lights just yet - the Oregon Zoo will recycle them and even throw in a sweet incentive.
The Zoo has been collecting old holiday lights throughout the 2009 ZooLights festival in hopes of converting homes to energy-saving LED models. Drop off the old lights by Sunday, Jan. 3, and recyclers will get a coupon good for one free piece of fudge at the Zoo's store.
Free fudge makes a nice addition to an already amazing ZooLights experience, said Michael Weatherman, an employee who works on environmental projects for the Zoo.
ZooLights used nearly 1.25 million lights this year, nearly 800,000 of which operate with less electricity than in years past.
Spokesperson Bill LaMarche said the Zoo has worked since 2000 toward making the annual family tradition more earth-friendly.
ZooLights and the recycling plan run through Jan. 3.
