PORTLAND On Thursday, drivers on Portland freeways started noticing signs that estimate traffic times, thanks to an initiative by the Oregon Department of Transportation.

ODOT launched the first of the new real-time reader boards that tell drivers the travel times to major exits and display alerts about delays or crashes that are ahead.

Officials said the signs will keep drivers informed without the dangerous distraction of looking down at smartphones.

The signs will be displayed along Interstate 5, Interstate 405 and Highway 217.
