PORTLAND -- Some Portlanders gathered outside City Hall Tuesday to mark Equal Pay Day.

The event marks the day in 2014 when women finally starting making the same amount of money that men earned in 2013. In other words, it took women an extra 98 days to make on average what men made last year.

The group at Tuesday s rally said they hope to shine a light on that problem and other challenges that affect workers in Oregon.

We need strong laws like the minimum wage law, like the sick leave law. We need responsible employers who want their employees to buy their products, said Senator Diane Rosenbaum, (D) Portland. It s a partnership. I think we need both.

Also on Tuesday, President Obama signed an order allowing federal employees to discuss their compensation, which is banned by some employers.
