PORTLAND -- The next best commuter bike could be coming from a design team in Portland.

Oregon Manifest and Levi's are backing a nationwide effort to put more people on bikes and out of cars.

Five design teams from across the country are competing to come up with the Ultimate Urban Utility Bike.

Portland, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Seattle are cities competing against each other. The Portland team is made up of employees from Industry, a design firm located in Northwest Portland.

Also on the team is Ti-Cycles Fabrication. Owner Dave Levy will actually build the teams final design.

It's got to be interesting. It's got to be attractive, said Levy During the 7-month-long process.

The teams post updates monthly on-line at Fast Company.

The public will choose the final winner. Fuji bikes will actually manufacture it and it will be ready for retail stores in 2015.

It's a obviously a city where you can cycle 365 days a year, noted Jess Putterman, design program manger at Industry. And we want to make that possible for people by designing a bike that really optimizes that.

Judging begins July 28. The final winner will be announced in August. The winning bike will be manufactured by Fuji bikes and ready for retail stores in 2015.
