WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- The Wilsonville High School acapella group once featured on NBC s The Sing off is getting more national attention.

In April, the students in Soul d Out will head to New York.

We re going to the international championship of high school acapella. We just won the regionals, which is crazy, said Senior Rachel Hawkins.

They ll compete against nine other groups in a three-song 12-minute set.

I know a lot of the schools are going to be bigger and many will be from performing arts high schools. We re just a normal high school where the kids take a class called 'Soul d Out,' remarked choral director Sue Schreiner.

She started Soul d Out seven years ago as an alternative to jazz choir.

The acapella revolution hit, and I had always liked rock and roll, she explained.

The popularity of the TV show Glee and the movie Pitch Perfect bolstered the revolution.

Coming here every day, it s one of my favorite classes ever, and we work hard to get the right sound, remarked sophomore Brock Taylor.

Perfecting the sound starts with a meeting at 7:30 in the morning.

Then when competition starts we practice from 6:30 to 8:30 at night, said Hawkins. It gets pretty intense.

The students are also working on raising the $35,000 needed for the trip to New York. It s a trip they expect to end on a high note.

You are very nervous, but you get up there and click with the audience and then it s just like singing at home in our high school auditorium, concluded Hawkins.
