BEND, Ore. -- Searchers in high winds and freezing rain have found a snowshoer who spent an unexpected night near the summit of Broken Top in the Cascade Range west of Bend.

The Deschutes County sheriff's office says 25-year-old Michael Holmes of Eugene was cold, wet and exhausted when the search party saw him on a snowmobile trail Monday evening. The searchers took him to his vehicle.

He had spent Sunday night near the summit, which is above 9,000 feet. He messaged friends he'd run into trouble but planned to snowshoe out Monday. They notified authorities when they didn't hear from him after that.

A press release from the sheriff's office describes Holmes as an experienced, well-equipped climber who wasn't prepared for an extended stay in deteriorating weather.
