PORTLAND -- A longtime mail carrier who admitted taking money out of cards and letters was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Portland to three years of probation.

The 54-year-old Tigard man, Bruce Douglas Menzies, pleaded guilty to mail theft. He also must pay a $2,500 fine and $300 in restitution.

Menzies was arrested in March after an investigation triggered by a grandmother who wondered why money she mailed to children did not arrive.

Menzies says he spent the money on alcohol. He has gone through a treatment program. He resigned from the Postal Service after a 23-year career.
