PORTLAND Portland teachers rallied Friday afternoon as contract talks between the teachers union and Portland Public Schools stood at deadlock. .

The two sides have 35 days to close a $200-million gap in negotiations. If a deal is not reached, teachers could strike just after winter break.

The rally will protest the school board s reckless and abrupt end to mediation, said Portland Association of Teachers spokeswoman Gwen Sullivan.

The rally began around 4:15 p.m. near the southeast side of the Burnside Bridge.

Parents and other community members join in and show support for the teachers.
