FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Forest Grove Fire and Rescue says having a plan helped a Forest Grove family safely escape from their burning home.

A mother and four children were home Sunday night when fire broke out in the garage and spread through a wall into the attic.

The fire department says the mother instructed her two older children to follow their fire escape plan to get out of the house and meet at a mailbox across the street.

While they did that, the mother took two younger children outside. Firefighters say the children had practiced their fire escape plan many times and it helped prevent injuries.

Firefighters stopped flames from reaching living areas of the home. The fire apparently started near a refrigerator in the garage.
