MADRAS, Ore. (AP) -- A suspected burglar is in critical condition after he was shot by an Oregon State Police sergeant during a confrontation in Central Oregon.

State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings says the 56-year-old man was shot by Sgt. Mike Turner on Friday after a manhunt that involved several agencies and a search plane.

A few hours before the shooting, the man eluded police after a reported burglary near Madras.

Hastings says the suspect is a fugitive wanted on an out-of-state warrant and he was armed during his encounter with police.
