PORTLAND -- A battle is brewing over a flag at a Bethany-area apartment.

One resident said she has rotated different flags, including the American flag, for the past seven years without a problem. She is now flying the U.S. Navy flag, which she put up to honor her husband, who died last summer.

Apartment managers recently notified all residents that they needed to remove items from common areas. Vera Brookshier said she has complied with the rules, except for the flag.

According to Brookshier's lease, residents are not allowed to put up banners or signs, or anything that impairs the building's structural integrity. The rules do not specifically mention flags.

Brookshier said she has reached out to corporate to try and resolve the issue before property managers remove the flag Tuesday.

KGW reached out to property managers as well, but did not receive a return call.
