PORTLAND-- A 55-year-old man who allegedly went on a crime spree in Portland last June died in his jail cell at the Multnomah County Detention Center Saturday night.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office says the man was identified as David Chilton by the medical examiner's office. He was in custody on a U.S. Marshal hold for bank robbery.

Police captured Chilton in June inside a Fred Meyer store in North Portland, a day after he allegedly brandished a handgun at PSU, robbed a bank in NE Portland, then stole a car at gunpoint.

A corrections deputy tried to wake Chilton for dinner Saturday in his cell but found the inmate unresponsive. Medical personnel tried unsuccessfully to revive him.
