PORTLAND -- To celebrate New Year's Eve, and the closing of the 25th year of ZooLights, the Oregon Zoo is offering free train rides Monday evening.
ZooLights will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $7 for children (and free for children under 3), but for the last night of the season the train ride will be free of charge.
The train can accommodate about 4,500 passengers per night, so prospective riders are encouraged to arrive early, said zoo spokesman Hova Najarian.
Monday is also the last night the Washington Park and Zoo Railway will be running on the Zoo Loop, Najarian added. The railway will be rerouted in 2013 for a newly-expanded Elephant Lands habitat.
He said nearly 180,000 people visited ZooLights this year, the second-highest total in the history of the event.
