PORTLAND - On Saturday, Aloha is opening the doors to its first community library.
Normally, folks will have to drive several miles out to get to a public library in Hillsboro and Beaverton. For the first time, Aloha residents especially kids- will have a library within walking distance.
Volunteers could not be more excited.
The community is beaming with pride, Eric Squires, Director of Aloha Community Library Association said.
Squires said the idea started from scratch a year and half ago.
Nearly 150 volunteers spent thousands of hours putting the place together. Everything from books to computers were all donated.
The community poured in $40,000 on the project.
I found that people are just really excited about the library to the point where they re shaking and going, 'when does it open? How can I be involved?' Squires said.
Squires said he was unemployed at one time and the job search can be tough without enough resources. Users will be able to use PCs and printers to hunt for jobs.
I really thought Aloha needed that, because if you re unemployed in Aloha, you have to go to Willow Creek PCC or Tualatin if you don t have a car or access to good bus service ... this is a solution to that problem, Squires said.
Volunteer Becky Jarvis said her 9-year-old son Zachary also helped with the effort.
He raised $50 doing a lemonade stand and selling dog biscuits, Jarvis said.
Jarvis said this library will really expand horizons for her 4th grader.
I know at our school right now we can only check out one book, because they don t have librarians anymore. When he was in school last year, he could check out four books. One book isn t a lot to check out, Jarvis said.
For the kids and the 50,000 other residents in the unincorporated area, the library is one for the history books and the beginning of a new chapter.
The Aloha Community Library Association said they still have a long way to go.
The grand opening celebration is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 22. The library is located at 17683 SW Farmington Rd, Suite E.
