SALEM -- Republicans in the Oregon House have a new leader in a rare mid-term shakeup.

Rep. Kevin Cameron of Salem says he stepped down from the job Wednesday, citing family and business obligations. Republicans chose Rep. Andy Olson of Albany to replace him.

Legislators rarely change their leaders between elections, and Cameron's departure came as a surprise. He'll retain his seat in the House.

The party leader is responsible for recruiting candidates and raising money for state House elections. The leader also is instrumental in shaping the party's message and strategy while the Legislature is in session.

House Democrats last year ousted Dave Hunt as leader after a disappointing showing in the 2010 elections and some high-profile legislative losses to Republicans.
