PORTLAND -- For the first time in 50 years, Alpenrose Dairy has canceled its Easter egg hunt due to record rains.
Even though the dairy has all the prizes for the hunt, officials said the fields won t be usable by Saturday.
Officials said the fields where up to 3,000 cars normally park are too muddy and soggy.
Vehicles got stuck in the mess Tuesday, officials said. The three baseball fields where kids scour for eggs were found to be saturated.
It was a big deal to cancel it because we ve always had it. The milk gets through in rain, shine and snow, but there s just too many other people involved coming out here and I don t want to risk any injuries or anything, said Alpenrose Dairy Co-President Carl Cadonau. It was something we had to do and we're sorry we had to do it.
The annual tradition attracts 5,000 children and their families to the dairy s SW Portland ball fields.
Dairy officials planned to celebrate their 50th anniversary next year - with twice as many prizes.
