BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Boise State football coach Chris Petersen has named former Montana and Idaho assistant Jonathan Smith as the Broncos new quarterbacks coach.
Smith has spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at Montana, helping lead the Grizzlies to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals in 2011.
Petersen said Thursday that Smith was successful as a coordinator and brings the type of expertise the Broncos need in helping their quarterbacks.
Before joining Montana, Smith spent six seasons coaching quarterbacks at the University of Idaho. Smith walked on at Oregon State where he played four seasons at quarterback.
He led the Beavers to an 11-1 record in 2001 and was named the MVP of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl after leading OSU to a 41-9 win over Notre Dame.
He holds Oregon State career and single-season records in passing yards, total offense and touchdowns.
